From The Great Depression to the Great Recession by Margaret Dubois
This is a video I worked on with Margaret DuBois about her experiences during the
Great Depression. The project was greatly enhanced by the drawings of Sue Corbett. It was made in three parts so it could
be posted on You-Tube.

Detective Abe Howard and his AI computer Maija are looking for a killer. Members of
high society are slimming down by getting massaged. Their fat is being removed via the hungry hands of aliens. The story
is set 50+ years into the future. The Colorado River is more like a stream. The population in So. Ca is greatly reduced. The
number of casinos in Vegas was reduced in a high stakes poker game. There is no money to keep the interstate highway
system in repair. Freight Trains do the heavy lifting. Cars are electric. Most travel is just local. The U.S. has drifted
down and is now in the technological third world. The global "Big Olga" network was devised elsewhere.
The computer OS known by its slur "Mister Spaghetti" takes 5 1/2 hours
to boot and burns out hard drives is less than a year.
There is wordplay in Spanish, Yiddish, and a word or two in French and Finnish.
I've borrowed the character Lady Windermere from Oscar Wilde's story "Lord Arthur
Saville's Crime" and turned her into the So. Ca social lioness Bea Windermere.

Celtic Fairy Tales
The Celts in general and the Irish in particular had a great love of stories
and would adapt stories from far away and make them Celtic. The link is to a PDF file with description of the stories and
clickable links to my readings of them.

Eight Tales by Jack London (1876 - 1916)
Jack London really was a person who went everywhere and did everything. His novels and short
stories have held up amazingly well considering he died in 1916. I've enjoyed visiting his home at Glen Ellen State Park.
I hope these 8 stories will serve as a proper introduction to his writing. The download is a PDF file containing links. No

Edison, His Life and His Inventions (1847 - 1931)
by Frank Lewis Dyer and Thomas Commerford Martin - 1929
The publication date seems a bit late as one of the authors died before 1920 and a
number of references are to events as they were in 1910. I was impressed with the many disciplines Edison worked in, the many
accidents along the way that might have killed or disabled him, and the anecdotes that testify to his sense of humor. Some
chapters are strong and a few are weak. The chapter on the phongraph predates the pressing of records. The chapter on the
motion picture is sketchy at best. I was left with the impression that he was a formidable genius

The Short Stories of Edna Ferber (1885 - 1968)
Edna Ferber was a prolific short story writer and there are a number of collections
of her stories. She has a very smooth flow to her writing and no wasted words. She is best known for her novel "So Big"
which won a pulitzer, her novel "Show Boat" which became the musical of the same name and "Giant" which was the last movie
James Dean appeared in before his death.

A Whale on Wall Street by Roy Trumbull
This is a natural disaster story, a financial disaster story, and a love story. The country faced an epidemic of Kidsheimers,
a condition that caused adults to become childlike at work. It led to subprime mortgages and such.

Alex the Parrot-guin

|
| Illustration by Bill Dempster |
A crazy story which opens in Tierra del Fuego at the tip of South America featuring Alex, a bird who is half parrot and half
penguin. Next stop is an island in the Antarctic inhabited by ancient Egyptians who hail him as their god incarnate.
(I had no idea a pasenger ship would hit an iceberg not long after I published this story.)
In Punta Tombo near Rawson Argentina he becomes a movie star and founds a chain of espresso cafes. His co-stars include
Juanita and Glyn. In supporting roles we have Ruffa the dog and Al the seagull, Bernie the ibis and the entire tribe of Sethites.
This story started out a bit more crazy than it is. It was made up on the spot to settle my grandson who was bouncing
off the walls late one afternoon. He climbed into my lap and listened. So, I thought, why not flesh it out? As to what age
group it's appropriate for, I think "none" is a fair answer.
